The Geneva Convention bans the use of tear gas in warfare, but it is still permitted for use to disperse riots in America. On June 2nd, 2020 President Trump allowed and supported the use of teargas on peaceful protestors in Lafayette Square. As protestors were hit with tear gas and assaulted by military police, Trump gave a speech stating he is an "ally to peaceful protestors."

https://mappingpoliceviolence.org reports that in 2019 black individuals made up 24% of those killed by police, despite being 13% of the population. There were only 27 days in 2019 where police did not kill someone.
The prompt for this creative session was "mending." I decided to apply that prompt to the conceptual elements of my work more so than the physical aspects. Racism in America has existed long before its official founding, and 243 years later we are still fighting for racial equality. Some people feel there is division in this country. Unfortunately the division described is over the belief of whether or not black people deserve to live. This division is not something that can be mended without addressing the deep rooted issues that caused division in the first place.
While each of these pieces can stand alone, my intention is to continue to produce more works that align with these and later combine them into a quilt.
